The safety of our students and staff is our top priority at Salt River Schools. Today's air quality is such that we have implemented a modified shelter-in-place at our school buildings, including the Early Childhood Education Center, Salt River Elementary School, and the Accelerated Learning Academy. We are encouraging everyone to stay indoors as much as possible; however, families will still be able to pick up/drop off students, and people can enter/exit our buildings as they normally would. We hope everyone stays safe. Air quality reports are available on multiple sites, including AccuWeather.com, by typing in your zip code.
We'd also like to remind families that tomorrow, Friday, June 14, is SRPMIC Day, and Community departments, including Salt River Schools, are closed.
If you have any questions about our modified shelter in place, or Friday's closure, call Salt River Schools at 480-362-2500.

Ske:g Taṣ! Kamduum?* Hello Salt River Schools Families,
I am eager to announce that I have named Dr. Emily Niu as the interim ECEC Leader. Her duties begin Monday, April 22. Dr. Niu has been with Salt River Schools since 2019; she has served as the former Salt River High School principal and is currently the Salt River Elementary School assistant principal. I am confident in their ability to lead the ECEC through this change.
In the meantime, I am working with Human Resources to fill the vacancy and hire a new leader as soon as possible. We will keep staff and families posted of all updates, but you can stay in-the-know and become more involved in the process by attending the monthly Policy Council meetings. Additionally, Dr. Niu and I will host two information sessions for families on Thursday, April 18; the first session will be held at arrival, from 7:30-8:30 a.m., and the second will be held at dismissal, from 3-5 p.m.
Thank you for your understanding and support during this time. If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

This message is an update to the message posted below on Friday, April 5.
Ske:g Taṣ! Kamduum?* Hello Early Childhood Education Center Staff and Families.
This first week of leadership transition on campus has gone remarkably well. Our staff have always collaborated through challenging times – our efforts to continue services during the pandemic closures come to mind, as well as our flexibility and patience with our many construction projects. It’s fitting that we’re celebrating the Week of the Young Child at the ECEC this week, since that exemplifies the work we do and commitment we have to the education and care the Community’s youngest children. Coming together for the children and families we serve transcends any challenge we face, including staff transitions.
At this time, I continue to work with Human Resources to name an acting ECEC leader. I will keep you updated on that process and will soon announce who that person will be. Thank you for your understanding and support during this time. We are blessed to care for your children and serve this wonderful Community.
Sincerely,
Sheryl Houston

This message is to let you know that the fire alarm went off at our school today around 12:40 p.m. We have learned the alarm was accidentally set off by construction workers in an unoccupied classroom when a tool they were using struck the alarm.
The Salt River Fire Department arrived swiftly to clear the area. Children were back in their classrooms by 12:45 p.m.
Your child may come home and have questions or want to talk about today’s fire alarm. This is a great opportunity for families to reinforce the lessons children are being taught in school. We recommend this article from Nemours KidsHealth: “What to do in a Fire.”
Thank you for entrusting us with the safety and wellbeing of your children. Please call the ECEC at 480-362-2200 with any questions.

An unknown substance was found today (3/28) at approximately 4:10 p.m. in an ECEC staff restroom, one that is inaccessible to children. Officers with the Salt River Schools security team and the Salt River Police Department were immediately called to campus to investigate and determined the substance was an over-the-counter antacid tablet, which was promptly destroyed.
Our top priority is your child’s safety. At Salt River Schools and the ECEC, we are committed to transparent communication that is accurate, timely, and appropriate. Today’s incident is a reminder to be vigilant with any medication, even if it is over-the-counter. While the antacid tablet was found in an adult-only restroom, staff and visitors need to be mindful about what is left around - in any location - as children often explore by putting things in their mouths.
I hope you have a great three-day weekend (there is no school tomorrow, 3/29, Good Friday). If you have any questions, please call or email me.

On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will occur. In Arizona, residents will experience a partial eclipse. Although it’s an exciting event with many educational opportunities, our top priority at Salt River Schools is student and staff safety, as well as respecting everyone’s cultural/spiritual beliefs.
In general, no recess/play or physical education classes will be held outdoors during the hours of the eclipse at Salt River Schools. However, some classes may use this opportunity to discuss STEAM-related curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Some families may prefer their children not participate in classroom eclipse activities: Please inform your child’s teacher/school if this is the case.

The Early Childhood Education Center is focused on keeping children safe and healthy. We know Valentine’s Day is a fun day to celebrate, however, we want to remind families that the ECEC is unable to celebrate the day with food and/or candy. Click here to review the letter we sent home to families back in November (use a Google Chrome browser), or we’d be happy to resend/reprint that for you.
In addition to following the Salt River Schools and SRPMIC Wellness Policy, a number of ECEC children have nutrition-related conditions that do not allow them to eat sweets. We ask that families do not share food-related treats or goody bags now or at any point during the year. Teaching staff are also not allowed to send home these types of items with children.
Goody bags are not expected, but we know many families enjoy sharing with their child’s classmates. If you’re interested in sharing a goody bag that does not contain any food/snack items, we suggest considering the following non-food items: coloring books, crayons, stickers, Valentine cards, and/or arts and crafts projects. Ask your child’s teacher or Family Advocate if you need more ideas.
Thank you for adhering to the ECEC’s safety and wellness policies. If you have any questions, please call or email anytime.

This message is to let you know about an issue related to the renovation of the HVAC system in two ECEC classrooms. A strong odor was reported around 11:30 a.m. in the Eagle and Bear classrooms. Public Works was called to investigate the source of the odor and determined it was non-hazardous. The odor was due to the installation of the new HVAC system.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Eagle classroom was moved to B-150; the Bear classroom had lunch in the Gathering Place and was moved into other classrooms near Playground 3.
Public Works ventilated the affected classrooms to help dissipate the odor more quickly.

Dear ECEC Families,
The safety and welfare of children, students, and staff are the highest priority at the Early Childhood Education Center. All our campuses practice safety drills throughout the year to help prepare staff and students for real emergency situations.
Today we practiced a lockdown drill led by our Safe Schools & Security Team, in partnership with the Salt River Police Department. Our school campuses each conduct four lockdown drills every school year, or as needed. This type of drill secures the school building and safely shelters all children, staff and visitors inside the building.
The purpose of this drill is to ensure that during a real emergency, children, staff, and visitors are kept safe from any danger that may occur outside or inside the building. During a lockdown drill, all perimeter doors to the school building are locked and remain locked until the danger or issue outside or inside the building is removed. To ensure everyone remains safe, no one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until school and law enforcement officials authorize such a release.
Our school has worked closely with local authorities, representatives from U.S. Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to correctly develop and implement safety procedures. The goal of practicing emergency drills throughout the school year is to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills.
Today’s lockdown drill began at 10:18 a.m. and security completed the drill and released classrooms around 10:30 a.m. Although the drill itself went smoothly, three classrooms were accidentally not released until staff from those classrooms notified supervisors around 10:55 a.m. We are working with security to ensure this situation doesn’t happen in the future.
Please note: During a real emergency, parents and emergency contacts of students will be notified during and after the event by Salt River Schools administrators through our SchoolMessenger notification system, which includes phone calls, texts, and email, among other platforms. As such, it is important your contact information on file be current. If you need to update your contact information, please contact your school's front office. It is important that parents and emergency contacts do NOT attempt to contact the school, teachers, or students during a real emergency as that could impact everyone’s safety.
Your child may tell you about today’s drill. We encourage you to talk with them about why drills are important and ask what they learned. Our goal in practicing these safety procedures is to be sure all students feel safe.
If you have any questions or need further information, please call the ECEC at 480-362-2200
Thank you,
Tami Brungard

Dear Early Childhood Education Center Families,
This message is to let you know that we have a couple of minor water leaks on campus: One is in our front lobby and the other in classroom C-115. Public Works, third party contractors, and the company completing our ongoing renovations are working to fix the leaks as soon as possible.
The front lobby leak has not affected children or staff; the classroom drip in C-115 is so minor that children and staff remained in the classroom and no health or safety issues were identified. We are monitoring both leaks closely and staff are diligently inspecting other areas as a precaution.
Outside of the heavy rains, we’re not sure yet what’s causing the lobby leak, nor do we have an estimated completion time for its repair. The classroom leak will be fixed immediately as part of the overall renovations occurring throughout campus. We will keep you updated if it looks like the issue is more widespread or impacts your child’s health in any way.
We thank you for trusting us with the care of your children. Please call or email if you have any questions.

This message is to let you know about a plumbing issue at the Early Childhood Education Center that impacted four classroom bathrooms in building A-3. Public Works reported today around 12:45 p.m. that all the toilets appear to be fully functional.
The issue was discovered Friday, Jan. 19; Public Works was notified around 11 a.m., but was unable to fix the problem. Public Works called in subcontractors to work on the issue Saturday, Jan. 20, and the toilets were reported as working that evening. However, ECEC staff reported the toilets still weren’t functioning this morning. The subcontractors were called in again today and fixed the issue, stating workers pulled out sanitizing wipes from the main sewer line.
A-3 classrooms utilized the outdoor children’s bathroom located at building A-2 while the plumbing was repaired.
This incident is a good reminder to staff and families that non-flushable items, such as wipes, plastic gloves, and sanitary items, should never go down the toilet, even if the packaging claims the item is flushable. Help us keep our plumbing systems working properly by teaching children not to flush things like wipes down the toilet.
Thank you, and please call or email if you have any questions.

The health and safety of our children and staff are our highest priority. This message is to let you know that when ECEC staff opened up classrooms on Tuesday, Jan. 9, some were cold and not at an appropriate room temperature.
A technician came to reset the heating units, and all but one of the affected classrooms were back to appropriate temperatures by 9:30 a.m. yesterday. The unheated room is expected to have a working unit ASAP; children and staff from that room are in a temporary location until their room is at an appropriate temperature.
It’s important to note that the ECEC anticipated the cold weather and had technicians on-site several times during Winter Break to ensure rooms were heating appropriately. On Monday, Jan. 8, there were no reports of cold classrooms. I want families to know that we have and will continue to monitor temperatures to ensure children and staff are safe and warm.

The safety of our staff and the children in our care is our top priority at the ECEC, and we practice emergency and crisis response plans with a variety of safety drills throughout the program year.
This message is to inform you that today, Wednesday, Dec. 13, we practiced a FIRE DRILL. These drills are a requirement and are completed in partnership with the Salt River Fire Department. This type of drill is an evacuation in which every adult and child evacuates the building to safety. Once everyone is accounted for, the drill is lifted and school/business resumes as normal.
We want children and families t to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded. Practicing ensures children will know what to do and how to do it in a real emergency.
Our drill today ran smoothly, and procedures were effortlessly followed. If you have any questions regarding today’s drill or other safety concerns, please contact the ECEC at 480-362-2200.

The ECEC prohibits parents/guardians and staff from bringing outside food into the classroom for activities or parties. This includes sending food items home with children. You can find this directive in the Salt River Schools Student and Parent Handbook (page 28). ECEC families may provide an age appropriate and non-food goody bag in lieu of a food item. The safety and security of our school campuses continue to be our first priority. Due to the landfill fire, the air quality is reduced. The landfill fire may continue to smolder for several days.EDU Leadership is in collaboration with Tribal departments to ensure staff and student safety.
At this time, all education buildings are in a shelter-in-place under our emergency management plans. Public Works staff will be closing all fresh air dampers and fresh air intakes to the HVAC units on all sites to reduce the amount of smoke going into our facilities. This decision was made to improve the air quality in our buildings. Masks have been distributed to school sites and are available to all staff and students.
We will continue to send updates as we receive them regarding this issue. Please reach out to your child's school for additional information.
Thank you,
Salt River Schools

The safety of our staff and the children in our care is our top priority at the ECEC, and we practice emergency and crisis response plans with a variety of safety drills throughout the program year.
This message is to inform you that today, Wednesday, Sept. 20, we practiced a FIRE DRILL.

Update September 6, 2023
Last week we notified you about the closure of Head Start (preschool) Playground 3 due to burrowing pests. The playground is now reopened for use. We’re happy to report that no critters have been spotted in the area since last week, and Public Works will be cementing under the ramp to minimize the chance animals burrowing there.
Part of the normal routine for ECEC staff anytime we’re outside with children is to check the area, including playgrounds, for animals and/or insects that might be around. We will continue to be vigilant, as the health and safety of our children is our top priority.
If you have any questions, call the ECEC at 480-362-2200.

The safety of our children is our top priority at the ECEC. This message is to let you know that emergency responders, including the Salt River Fire Department and an ambulance, were called to the ECEC today after a child experienced respiratory distress in the classroom. Due to federal privacy laws, we are not allowed to disclose more information; however, we are expecting the child to make a full recovery and return to campus soon.
Some children may come home today and want to talk about the first responders on campus, or about the injury their classmate experienced. Just like teachers do in classrooms, we encourage families to talk with young children about emergency responders and the importance of safety and taking care of our bodies. Our health team recommends parents check out this resource from Nemours KidsHealth for more information.

A snake and other small animals burrowing under a ramp on Head Start (preschool) Playground 3 were discovered today.
We immediately moved all children out of the area and closed the playground. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Salt River Schools security staff, SRPMIC Public Works, and SRPD Animal Control were contacted to address the situation and resolve the issue.
Playground 3 will be closed until a solution is found. Until then, Head Start (preschool) classrooms will be able to use Playground 4 for outdoor play.
If you have any questions, call the ECEC at 480-362-2200.

The safety and welfare of children, students, and staff are the highest priority at Salt River Schools. All our campuses practice safety drills throughout the year to help prepare staff and students for real emergency situations.
Today, August 31, lockdown drills were practiced at the Early Childhood Education Center and the Accelerated Learning Academy. The lockdown drill was led by our Safe Schools & Security Team, in partnership with the Salt River Police Department. Our school campuses each conduct four lockdown drills every school year, or as needed. This type of drill secures the school building and safely shelters all students, staff and visitors inside the building. Click here to read the rest of our notice.

The message is to inform you that our campus fire alarm sounded this morning around 7:13 a.m. The Salt River Fire Department responded quickly and cleared the alarm shortly thereafter.
According to authorities, the alarm was triggered by construction happening on our campus. Work crews were sawing into the ceiling where the current site and new construction meet. The friction from the saw caused sparks, which landed on the roof and ignited debris. This caused smoke to be brought into the B building air system.
The Fire Marshal cleared the all rooms except B-150, which was being used as the temporary Cougar classroom, while their air conditioning was being fixed. Cougar children and staff have returned to A-113, as their A/C is now working without issues. Room B-150 will be available for use when the smell of smoke dissipates.
During the alarm, our staff, children, and visitors all evacuated without issue, and we are grateful for the quick response from the fire department. The Fire Marshall spoke with construction crews to ensure debris is removed to prevent this situation from happening in the future.
Your child may come home talking about what happened today. Just like teachers do in classrooms, we encourage families to talk with young children about what to do when they hear a fire alarm. Click here to review some great fire safety tips from the American Red Cross.
If you have any questions, please call the ECEC at 480-362-2200.

We also wanted to take the opportunity to update families about last week’s incidents regarding the discovery of unknown substances and the deep clean of our campus.
Public Works sanitized our entire campus August 11-13, including all bathrooms, classrooms, playground equipment, and offices. Additionally, the doors to the ECEC cafeteria and all outdoor bathrooms remain locked and are being checked every hour throughout the day by ECEC leaders. We also increased the presence of our SRPD School Resource Officer and our Safe Schools & Security team on campus.
The information we are allowed to share about last week’s incidents remains limited, as they are being actively investigated by authorities. We can tell you that the substances found in all three incidents have been sent to a lab for testing.
We want to share as much as we can. To that end, SRO Daniel Brown and Security Manager Esteban Lopez will host two informal sessions for parents to ask questions and learn more about the procedures followed in cases like this. Dear Early Childhood Education Center Families,
The ECEC will be closed immediately today, Friday, Aug. 11, to undergo deep cleaning. Please pick up your child as soon as possible.
This decision was made out of an abundance of caution with respect to the three incidents that have occurred this week and the discovery of unknown substances in adult restrooms. All three incidents remain under investigation, and we still do not know what the substances are; however, student safety and wellness is our top priority. We appreciate your understanding as we work to find answers and ensure our campus remains as safe as possible.
The ECEC will reopen at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14. Please call the ECEC with any questions or email [email protected].

Dear Early Childhood Education Center Families,
This notice is to let you know of an incident that occurred on campus today requiring the presence and coordination of our Safe Schools & Security team and the Salt River Police Department.
Custodial staff found an unknown substance today while cleaning an adult restroom on campus and immediately reported it to security and police; like the two incidents we informed you about yesterday, this is now under active investigation by law enforcement. We do not know what the substance is, and it would be inappropriate to speculate. Additionally, because all three incidents are under investigation, we are not allowed to disclose specific details.
Other than possibly seeing police on campus, these incidents have had no impact to ECEC children or their learning day. However, your child’s safety is our top priority, and we are taking this matter seriously. Out of an abundance of caution, the ECEC will take the following actions until we have more information from investigators:
- The ECEC will lock all exterior restrooms, regardless of whether or not they are for adults or children.
- The office area restrooms will be available to adults.
- Children will continue using the restrooms located inside their classrooms; staff may use a classroom restroom if no children are present.
Like the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Salt River Schools, the ECEC has a zero tolerance drug policy. If you see something suspicious, please report it to law enforcement. Furthermore, if you or someone you know is experiencing issues with addiction, please call the 24/7 Behavioral Health Services Crisis Line at 480-850-9230. Dear Early Childhood Education Center Families,
This notice is to let you know of incidents that occurred on campus this week that required the presence and coordination of our Safe Schools & Security team and the Salt River Police Department.
On two separate occasions, custodial staff found an unknown substance while cleaning a restroom on campus. Both incidents occurred in the same restroom and were immediately reported to security and police and are under active investigation by law enforcement.
We want to make it clear that the bathroom in question is not used by children, and while all Salt River Schools staff and some campus visitors would have access to this bathroom, it is not one commonly used by ECEC staff.
We do not know what the substance is; however, we are taking this matter seriously and want to be proactive with our families. This is a great reminder to stay vigilant, and remember that we have a zero tolerance drug policy in our Community and especially at Salt River Schools. If you see something suspicious, please report it to law enforcement.
Thank you,
Tami Brungard
