Voting is a fundamental right. At Salt River Schools, we strive to instill strong citizenship values in our students, including how to express their likes and dislikes in kind, community-minded ways. We want students (and their adult family members!) to know their voice counts and that it's important to vote!

To encourage our youngest to become familiar with voting, we're offered a fun election for ECEC students to choose their favorite book about one of our favorite things to eat: fried dough (in its various forms a.k.a. frybread, a.k.a. popovers, a.k.a. bannock, a.k.a. wamajda)! We asked families to read each story and help their child vote for their favorite story! The votes were tallied and the winner is "The Wamajda Man!" Check out the book below!

Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, by Kevin Noble Maillard, was a book distributed to all ECEC students earlier this school year. A read-aloud of the book can be watched here, as well.

The Wamajda Man, a familiar story similar to the Gingerbread Man and adapted by our very own Education Native Language & Culture team (BONUS: There's a local recipe included!). Watch Miss Salt River Isabella Dockerty read the story aloud below:
